Feeder Considerations
When selecting
a bird feeder it is important to keep a few factors in mind:
- The type of birds you
are trying to attract. Click
here to learn more about the birds in your area.
- The preferred seed needed
to attract them.
- The desired appearance
and visible setting for the feeder.
- Proximity of protective
landscaping.
- Ease of cleaning and maintenance.
- Competition and threat
from other animals
(cats, squirrels, raccoons, hawks).
- Necessary seed capacity
(best to add on a daily basis).
- How many birds you are
trying to attract.
Keep in mind
that the type of bird visiting your feeder is dependent not
only on the type of feed selected, but also the feeder and its
relative placement. As discovered in a landmark study by the
US
Fish & Wildlife Service, the birds feeding on White Proso
Milet prefer ground or large platform feeders, while oil-type
sunflower feeders prefer an elevated feeder with small perching
areas, such as that found in tubular feeders. For birds that
prefer feeding at ground level, we suggest avoiding the temptation
to merely spread the seed on the ground. it is recommended that
you use a
ground feeder. Established studies have shown this to be
less than sanitary unless you allocate small amounts of seed
to different areas on a regular basis. Visit
our feed department for more information on bird seed &
suet.
Water actually
attracts more species of birds than either feeders or nesting
boxes, remember to include this basic element in your habitat
plans. Check out our full line of bird
